Sam Bird in the Monaco tunnelFor Sam Bird, a GP2 and Monaco rookie, the weekend had started well with impressive pace in qualifying. During the feature race, however, when the young Brit was challenging his team mate for 4th position, a disastrous pit stop by his otherwise excellent team put an end to his hopes of silverware.

Starting from a lowly 18th place in the sprint race as a result Sam put in a stunning drive, clocking fastest lap early on then improving on his own mark a few laps later with three purple sectors and managing the rare feat of overtaking several cars on the streets of the principality (including multiple Monaco winner Pastor Maldonado), to claw himself into the top ten and earn the point for fastest lap.

"Of course, this feels like a missed opportunity because we have showed that he had the pace to score big in both races here", said Bird.

"Having said that, I am in no way upset or disappointed with my team. These mistakes happen and are part of racing. They have my full support as I have always had theirs. We win together, we lose together!

"The main positive that I take away from this weekend and that, like in Barcelona, we have excellent pace and if we can carry this form onto Turkey and beyond it could be a very interesting season."
